The Belle of Amhers

Out Of Thin Air

Fritz Coleman

Box 27

An attractive young woman (like many young women before her) seeks that one perfect guy to make her life complete. Who will it be? : Her high school sweetheart? The confident businessman? The rambunctious musician? Taking the advice of a friend, she acquires a God Box. It becomes the repository of her wishes, hopes and dreams. What emerges from the God Box is not what she would initially expect, but is nonetheless a satisfying conclusion. What elevates “ God Box” above other solo shows about dating and looking for romance is its solid musical component. Actor-musician-composer-singer-writer Ana Guigui has been nominated for an L.A. Music Award and a Grammy. Her wide vocal range spans from opera to pop. She is an accomplished keyboardist. In her new show, the musical selections range from pop evergreens to original material. Ana Guigui was born in New York into an accomplished musical family. Her Argentine Jewish parents were a symphony conductor and an operatic soprano. Her brother is also a musician. Here’s another divergence from most solo shows. Unlike most solo performers, Ana doesn’t hate her parents. In her show, her abundant affection for them is apparent. However, like many other young women, she finds them over-protective at times and momentarily exasperating. Ana portrays multiple characters in the show. Ana Guigui toured as a keyboardist/vocalist with Christopher Cross for seven years and has also recorded and/or sung live with Ben Folds, Jon Secada, Deborah Gibson, Stephen Bishop, Andrew Gold, America, Juan Gabriel, Bo Bice and more. Her previous stage credits include the national tour of “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story,” the New York and Los Angeles productions of “Tony N’ Tina’s Wedding,” and more. Her many television appearances include “JAG,” “Strong Medicine,” “General Hospital,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” and more. Her CD, “Love Is On The Line,” produced by Andrew Gold, includes one selection in Spanish, her first language. She teaches at Cal Poly Pomona and Lee Strasberg Institute. “God Box” is directed by Robert Lyon Barker. A graduate of the University of Vermont, he studied conducting with Leonard Bernstein. Barker sang lead roles in all thirteen Gilbert & Sullivan operettas for the Light Opera of Manhattan and also performed throughout the United States. His previous directing credits include “St. Joan,” “Heartbreak House,” “Lady Windemere’s Fan,” “Macbeth,” Patience,” “The Mikado,” “Charlie’s Aunt,” “Cabaret,” “The Fantasticks” and “Back to Methuselah.” “God Box” is a concert mixed in with a solo show. It’s very easy to enjoy.
